Today we left Marseille to head east for some hiking. Our starting point was Cassis, the head of a trail that we were planning to hike and a city that our travel book didn't even mention. Upon seeing Cassis, the only reason that we could come up with for its omissions was that the French are trying to keep it to itself.
Sandwiched between two cliffs, anchored by beautiful beaches, jammed with restaurants and with an idyllic harbor, Cassis could have been our destination. But we stuck with our planned hike after a quick panini and did it did not disappoint. Cliffs, coves and beaches and cliffs, coves and beaches - it was just spectacular and may have launched a new business:).
As if that wasn't enough, we spent the night at an Olympique Marseille match, which may have been the most "French" thing we have seen so far. The opposing team scored in the first two minutes, so between puffs from their cigarettes the rowdy supporters clubs (there were 3, together about 20,000 dedicated super fans) turned on the team and by the end of the match cheered, loudly, an opposing goal, mockingly cheered completed passes, with half of the fans walking out after the 3rd goal and a small minority staying to instigate a confrontation with the police.
