Well we did it. We managed to make a trip from Sydney to Martinsborough (an hour NE of Wellington) take 31 hours. Travelling on a budget resulted in: a car ride to the Sydney Airport, a short flight to Auckland, a six hour excursion of coffee and mexican food in the city, a twelve hour frigid bus ride to Wellington with a figgidty driver (awesome at night on side roads), another two hours in Wellington freezing and looking for coffee and heat (thank you Starbucks) and finally an hour train ride to wine country. But it all appears to be worth it. We are trying out WWOOFing this week which essentially means we will work four hours per day in exchange for board (we are in a stand alone cottage between the main house and garden) and meals (which have so far been gourmet).
Our hosts are Ineke and David and they have a really nice colonial home with acres of well manicured yard and some gardens which they use in their cooking. From what we can gather they essentially run this small town, owning the grocery store, clothing store, hardware store, a vineyard, and a few properties so wr guess we chose well. Let's just hope the work is good!
Oh, our cottage seems to come with an accentric cat that already follows us around.
