Today was our last day in Firenze and we made our requisite pilgrimage to the Galleria dell'Accademia to see Michaelangelo's David. To be honest we had low expectations after the Uffizi but we will say that if you are in Firenze you MUST see David. It is more impressive in person than a picture can ever communicate. In addition some unfinished Michaelangelo sculptures (started for Pope Julius II but now referred to as the 'Prisoners') there are more contemporary and multimedia fixtures that make this museum a must see. Now, pictures were not allowed but we found an accurate representation of David and will also be sending family members the pictured cooking aprons (which in hindsite we aren't sure we were allowed to picture).
Near the Duomo we also saw some doors that the artist spent 21 years on...seriously, 21 years. Essentially he made doors and died.
Now for the most important part of our day - Italia and Espana opened their UEFA Cup against eachother. On the recommendation of Giada we made our way to an old jailhouse now bar to watch the match with about 200 Florentines. The game was a draw for the club (positive outcome for Italia) but a big win for us. For one thing it was just a fun event, but almost as important we learned that to appear as a local during their next match with Croatia while in Roma you just need to yell: 'grande,' 'bellisima,' 'ayyyyyy, 'ohhhhhhhhh,' 'bastardo,' and again 'ayyyohhayyy.' Amanda also believes she heard 'bippity bobbity boopity,' along the lines of this
conversation.
Of course we indulged in some more espresso, gelato and chianti to power our packing and preparation to leave for Roma at 8am.
Buonasera all.

The doors. They are cooler in person, but still...doors. |

Jailhouse bar (not sure it's real name). Great game for Italy. |

We did not intend for this to come out so artistically, we really just wanted a picture of the two flavored gelato we have come to love. |
|
Celebrations at the bar. |
|
DAVID, sorta. |

Milling around outside the jailhouse bar after the game. |

More of the crap you can expect to be peddled in Florence. |
Had the same impression of the Accademia! David was much more impressive than we imagined.
